The Different Truck Licence Levels in BC

To legally operate a commercial vehicle, you must have a commercial truck licence. These licences come in various levels and each with their own restrictions and requirements. Whether you want to drive a semi-truck or operate a bus, you will need to get a commercial licence and undergo training at a driving school.

Truck Licence Levels – Which One Do You Need?

The type of commercial truck licence you will need depends on the commercial truck you will be driving. These licences include:

  • Class 1 – A Class 1 licence allows you to drive a semi-truck and any Class 1 through 5 vehicles (motorcycles are not included).
  • Class 2 – This allows you to drive a bus and any vehicle allowed in Class 4 or 5.
  • Class 3 – This permits you to drive any truck with more than two axles – including tow trucks and dump trucks.
  • Air Brake Highway Endorsement – This allows you to operate a large truck, bus, or RV equipped with air brakes on all roads and highways in British Columbia.
  • Air Brake Endorsement Off-Highway – This allows you to operate large vehicles with air brakes while transporting natural resources (such as logs) on designated logging roads.
